The Real Story Behind Duran Duran Appreciation Day - EXCLUSIVE!!!
I couldn't believe this came to our email this morning. I feel honored to have received it. It was submitted by M.J. Kennedy and I received permission to post it here...It is in its unedited form. ~Kirk, DDWW
The Real Story Behind Duran Duran Appreciation Day, by M.J. Kennedy
Hello! I know you said the story had to be FICTIONAL, but here's the real story, from the actual guy (ME) who started honoring Duran Duran on his birthday:
I was a radio DJ at WKQSfm in a small town in Michigan, and received in the mail at the radio station a request for event/holiday submissions from Chase's Calendar of Events. I have always been a fan of Duran Duran, and happened to be playing them on the radio at the time, and I thought "This band is VERY underrated (This was in the late 90s, when they were not at the height of their popularity), and deserves recognition!" SO I decided to fill out the form to create a National Duran Duran Appreciation Day.
When it came time to choose a date, it had NOTHING to do with a boat accident, because that's morbid and also I didn't have any idea about that having occurred, so I chose my own birthday, so I would always remember what day to celebrate! I know that's not mysterious or romantic, but it's the truth. A few old-timers still work at that station who might be able to verify, or Chase's Calendar might still keep records for a crack research team to uncover...
I was interviewed a year or two after that, for a national magazine (don't recall which) because at the time Chase's DID have my contact info somehow attached to the event, but since then I have kept relatively silent (aside from telling all of my friends!) because I am no longer in radio and don't need the attention, but since I have seen several interesting theories out there, many years past, I am obliged to set the record straight.
Anyway, I know my story doesn't qualify for your contest, but I check every year to see what people are doing to celebrate, and thought I'd contribute my 2 cents.
Happy DDAD!

Thank you for setting it all straight. And thanx for giving us all a reason to talk to our non-Duranie friends about them even more than we already do, lol.
