Interview with Luigi Caneiro Music

Interview with Luigi Caneiro Music, by Kirk Harrington, Duran Duran Worldwide
I had the pleasure of speaking with Luigi Caneiro, music producer, bassist, singer, and songwriter.  Luigi started his music career in Brazil, performing in various bands (heavy rock, pop, and acoustic groups) and making jingles for commercials.  He recorded over 300 jingles when he lived in Brazil…for even major clients like Fiat, Volkswagen, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Kellogg’s, several national banks and Pringles.  He has been playing music for about 40 years.  He moved to the US in 2000, where he has been a solo artist and still does commercial work.  He has worked on several albums throughout his career, including Alderan (1990), Paul Mounsey’s Nahoo (1996), Nahoo 3 (1999), Notes from the Republic – Brenner Bianco’s first album (1995), Fenix (2002), and recently released his own solo album Staring at Paradise in Times of Chaos (2020).  Luigi comes from a family of opera singers, and cites as his main influence The Beatles and Duran Duran, followed by Sting, Seal, and Michael Jackson.  He has a passion for Motorsports, particularly Formula One Racing.  His son (Bruno Caneiro) is a professional Formula Renault/Formula 3 Racing driver.

Speaking about the instruments he plays, Luigi says this…
“I feel i can play bass decently, but I am not virtuoso. I also play piano and guitar, and although I recorded some acoustic guitars and piano in the album, I play them mostly to write my songs, but rather have brilliant musicians like Marcelo Lima to record guitars and keyboards, Bruno Bona to play pianos, and keyboards and Brenner Bianco to play guitars. What I feel confident about is singing which i consider my real "instrument"”

Kirk, DDWW:  Hi Luigi.  Thank you for interviewing with DDWW.  As a group, one of the things we do is interview artists and professionals who say they have been influenced and inspired by Duran Duran in their work.  That is why I am excited to interview you since I heard that you cite them as an influence.
My first question to you comes from Tracey Elena, our Media Rep and newest DDWW partner:
"You grew up in a family of classically trained opera singers and musicians. How did the influence of Duran Duran come about?"

Luigi Caneiro:  Dear Tracey and everyone at DDWW! Yes, my father and uncle are classically trained opera singers and my grandmother was a flute player and the local philharmonic orquestra in my home town in Brazil.
My mom's family was very musical as well and grandfather was a violin player and crazy about opera, which made me  surrounded by great music my entire childhood. But despite coming from classical music background, both of my parents listened and listen to every style of music and at the age of 4, my dad sat me down and played me The Beatles "Red Album 1962-1966" and then I was hooked.
As my favorite Beatle, Paul McCartney was my introduction to my passion with Bass playing. I always paid attention to the great bass players like Bernard Edwards, Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius and others.
Then in 1981, a friend of mine returned from a 6 months stay in London, and brought with him an album from a band called Duran Duran and that really changed everything.
While many bands had musicians I liked, Duran Duran had the amazing bass lines of John Taylor which drove me crazy, but the whole band was the full package. Simon's voice was unique and melodic, Nick's sequences were energetic, Roger's tight and punchy drums, Andy's burning and precise riffs. All that with a new, stylist look and a mix of the disco music I loved and the memorable melodies that i could relate with The Beatles.
After that, Duran Duran became a huge deal in Brazil and we started trying to emulate them in clothing, hair and playing covers of the band.
A funny thing, my dream was to get the same bass JT had, an AriaPro II. We were looking for a name for our band, and i thought the bass brand was Ariaproll, and that became our bands name.
So Duran Duran is more than an influence to me. They became part of my life and the soundtrack of many incredibly important moments of my existence, musically and personally.

Kirk, DDWW:  I’m curious...which album was it your friend brought you?  So you know, for me, 7 and the Ragged Tiger hooked me on the band.  The song ‘Reflex’ especially.

Luigi Caneiro:  It was DD's first album, the "White Album". Anyone Out There is still my fave DD song

Kirk, DDWW:  From what I can tell from reading about you, you like to involve your family in your music.  Please tell us more about that.  By the way...I really like the song ‘We Work Well Together’...your daughter was involved with that one right?

Luigi Caneiro:  Hahaha, only the family members that have musical talent. In this case it is my youngest, Gabriella. She is a really good singer and very artistic. She is the only one that has always shown musical interest. My son Bruno is an accomplished race car driver and my other daughter Giuliana is on her way to becoming a veterinarian as she is an avid animal rights activist.
But i like the idea of having them participate even if its for fun like when I had Bruno and my wife Lisa in the We Work Well Together clip.  And yes, Gabriella is involved not only on the WWWT clip but she also does back up vocals on the song and many others in the album.

Kirk, DDWW:  Please tell us more about yourself.  You said you were in a band before.  What other professional projects and music releases have you done?  Have you done any interesting collaborations with anyone?

Luigi Caneiro:  Yes, I have been in many bands and musical acts over the years.  The most important ones in my career were “Rio” and “Alderan”.
Rio was mostly a cover band that existed from 1984 till 1987. Marcelo Lima, the producer of my new album was the guitar player and also shared vocals with me. We played mostly Duran Duran, The Police, Men at Work and Depeche Mode.  Alderan, existed from 1987 until 1992. We wrote original material and achieved reasonable success back then.
In 1996, I was invited to make the Portuguese adaptations for a major Japanese anime “YuYu Hakusho”. To this day, we have hundreds of thousands of fans that follow my work especially in Brazil, because of my singing on YuYu Hakusho!
I also played in nightclubs and bars for many years, also recording hundreds of jingles for brands like Volkswagen, Coca Cola, Levi’s just to name a few.
After moving to the US, I have produced locals Utah artists and work on the advertising for Rodízio Grill - a Brazilian Steakhouse.
I worked with many renowned musicians throughout my career. One of my most proud collaborations was with Scottish songwriter Paul Mounsey. We worked together in the Nahoo project in the 90’s back in Brazil.
Another important project was working with Bruno Bona and Brenner Bianco on Bianco’s two albums as a composer and singer.
In the US, I produced the album of a singer called Del.  That was a tough project as all the musicians involved in that project worked pro-bono and I invested a lot of money and two years producing the album, writing the songs, playing keyboards, guitars and bass as well as doing all the back up vocals.  I printed over 600 copies of the CDs on a special printer I purchased just for that.  Also cut and assembled each case for the cds.
When it was time to release the album, the “artist” decided to turn his back on the project and left me with the bills and a bunch of cd’s and some were used as beer coasters, others were flying discs, spinning wheels, dog toys...😂

Kirk, DDWW:  If you could collaborate with Duran Duran, what kind of project would you like to do and which band member would you especially enjoy jamming with?

Luigi Caneiro:  Well, I would love to have Simon singing with me in one of my songs and vice versa! Would love to jam with all of them and because my instrument is the bass, I would love to just sit during a recording session and watch JT laying down some tracks on a DD song😊

Kirk, DDWW:  Please tell us about upcoming projects you have coming up.  And on what platforms can people find your music?

Luigi Caneiro:  Well, on January 31st, 2020 my full album “Staring at Paradise in Times of Chaos” was released thru Dying Light Records from Toronto, Canada.
The album has a total of 15 tracks including the 5 singles previously released.
I have been really anxious to have the whole album released as it was conceived in the sense of the traditional concept of a beginning, middle and end with songs connected by a common tread as if you were embarking on a musical journey.
I am very proud of the whole album, but have my favorites in the songs...Look at Us Stars! written for a beautiful worldwide campaign by Rising Star Outreach that for the past 20 years have been changing the lives of hundreds of thousands of people affected by Leprosy in India, also “Four Weeks” is my favorite as I consider it my best composition in years and it was beautifully arranged by Marcelo Lima, the producer of the album.
We also have an incredible “Club Mix Night Version” of We Work Well Together that we previously released as a single. The remix was brilliantly done by Glenn Morrison who is one of the most respected and accomplished musicians/DJs in the world.
I have been very blessed to have some of the best musicians in the world playing in this album, like Bruno Bona on keyboards and synths, Brenner Bianco on guitars, Marcelo Effori on drums, JJ Frannco on bass in one of the songs and of course Marcelo Lima, playing most of the guitars and keyboards in the album.
Marcelo and I met in high school many moons ago and we have been best friends since then.
So the album came out out on January 31st, on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, Yandex Music, iHeart Radio, Pandora, Google Music worldwide!
