My Review of Moonage Daydream

I thought it would be nice to take a departure from what we usually write about and post something else I also enjoy doing, which are movie reviews.  Here is my review of Moonage Daydream, the David Bowie documentary.

Kirk Harrington

If I were to describe #moonagedaydream in two words, I'd call it beautiful chaos. The movie is not a movie at all really, but almost dream-like and a journey of light, music, sound, images, colors, and a peek into an extraordinary man's life from youth to death, as he constantly reinvented himself over time through music and art...becoming in effect a work of art that we can still admire today. I honestly was left feeling a sense of loss and sadness because I did not grow up knowing enough about David Bowie...I knew of him later in his career, through the movie Labyrinth, a few songs in the 80s and through the group Duran Duran who cites him as an influence.

To see his life though...presented this way...with a breaking down and reimagining constantly...flowing over itself like a wave through time...with recurring images sort of chaotically put together into a fascinating display (that is almost like a musical score) really challenged my senses. Everything I knew about him was blown apart and I was left trying to understand Bowie in a completely different and astounding way. The movie even left me with questions and wondering about my life in general. I was left feeling that out of chaos can come beautiful things and that life is precious and time is precious and we should not waste it. There is so much we can do and so much we can explore and so much we can learn...and we can take daily opportunities to learn about ourselves and follow our passions and interests where they lead us. It doesn't matter if we make mistakes or don't do things exactly right; part of exploration is accepting the unknown and discovering oneself in each imperfect step and moment of our lives.

The movie is profound and I recommend it to anyone wanting to understand David Bowie in a unique and interesting way...and to understand yourself and life in a different way. I can't but give it a 5/5 because of how distinct it is. I've really never seen a movie like it.
